A Murder in Gurgaon

Gurgaon. December 2014. A young event manager, an ex-cop's son, is murdered. Inspector Ajai Singh vows justice. There is little to begin with, and frustration mounts when the initial suspect – a reclusive woman with a mysterious past – is found missing. Digging deeper, Singh uncovers a sordid tale of adultery, blackmail and revenge, only to find himself staring at a conspiracy unlike any he has seen. There are deceits, little and big, to decode; the predator and victim are indistinguishable; his witnesses could be misleading; his closest ally may not be an ally at all. Will Singh succeed? Or has the sick, wily mind behind the crime always been a few steps ahead? Refreshingly told, with a cast of morally ambivalent characters and an accent on the minutiae of crime, A Murder in Gurgaon will keep you hooked till the very end.

Community-based Natural Resource Management

Non-governmental organisations today, as part of civil society, have come to play a prominent role in South Asia in the context of community-based natural resource management (CBNRM). This book examines the theory and practice of NGO-driven CBNRM within the framework of emerging critiques of dominant discourses of development, the micro-politics of decentralisation and the projection of community development. The book breaks new ground by contextualising these critiques using six detailed cases of CBNRM initiatives. The authors delve into the extent to which CBNRM offers a vision for the future and question what role, if any, could NGOs paly in this. They seek to understand the insights into CBNRM that intervening agencies generate through their work, by examining the outcomes of the interventions and the strategies used to achieve them. The book concludes that though these CBNRM efforts have made significant contributions to livelihood enhancement, the results gained are limited in the equitable access to benefits, sustainability of resource use, and in terms of democratic decentralisation.

Report on Conditions of Work and Promotion of Livelihoods in the Unorganised Sector

Concentrating on the informal sector of the economy—which accounts for an overwhelming proportion of the poor and vulnerable population in India—and their working environments, this analysis is based on the latest information from the 61st round of the National Sample Survey 2004–2005. Combining those results with supplemental data, this account proposes two comprehensive bills as well as a number of measures to ensure minimum work conditions and promotions of livelihoods for both the agricultural and nonagricultural laborers. This publication also includes a CD-ROM comprising three other reports from the commission: Social Security for Unorganised Workers, National Policy on Urban Street Vendors, and Comprehensive Legislation for Minimum Conditions of Work.
